The completion of the 223-mile North Carolina Railroad in 1856 was pivotal, giving rise to a thriving industrial village at Wilson’s Mills. A station at Wilson’s Mills was erected by 1867-1868, making it one of 28 stations along the route at that time. The railroad’s arrival led to the construction of supporting infrastructure such as water towers, warehouses, and other buildings that served both passengers and freight. The roadbed was built with gravel and supported wrought iron T-rails, with bridges made of wood resting on masonry piers. This railroad connected Goldsboro to Charlotte and placed Johnston County, including Wilson’s Mills, within the prosperous Piedmont Crescent, facilitating a shift from subsistence farming to market-driven agriculture and spurring the growth of local industries such as cotton, grain, turpentine, and lumber. The town’s strategic location along the railroad made it an important stop and contributed to its initial establishment in 1868, with the purpose of bringing electricity to the mills surrounding the railroad. #WilsonsMillsNC #RailroadHistory Town of Wilson's Mills 1 week 4 days ago 🐾 Pupdate from the Wilson’s Mills Dog Park! 🐶 Things are really shaping up at our future bark-tastic playground! The mulch is down, gates are latched, and work on the parking lot is underway. 🦴🚧 There are still a few more tail-wagging tasks to accomplish before we open the gates, but we're getting closer every day to unleashing this space for our furry friends (and their humans!) to enjoy. Stay tuned for more pupdates—we can’t wait to throw open the gates and say “Welcome!” . . . or maybe it should be “Woof!” 🐕🎉 #WilsonsMillsNC #WMDogPark #ParkUpdate #DogParkDreams Town of Wilson's Mills 1 week 5 days ago 📢 Hey, Wilson’s Mills!
