Wilson’s Mills has experienced a large influx of growth over the past several years and the confusion regarding property owners’ mailing and physical addresses within the town limits has grown substantially. Unless residents purchase a post office box in Wilson’s Mills, the mailing and physical addresses inside Wilson’s Mills have either a Smithfield or Clayton address due to the required delivery from one of those post offices. This has created confusion not only regarding mail and package delivery, but also confusion by new residents about where they are located, who to call for various services, and which voting district to which they belong.
In an effort to clear up this confusion and create a sense of community and identity for our growing area, Town leaders have been working diligently with the US Postal Service to create addresses that reflect the identity of our community.
With the permission of Roselle Murrell, USPS District Manager, effective immediately, all property owner addresses will use the Preferred Last Line (PLL) town name of Wilson’s Mills but will keep the current zip code assigned to the address. For example, the original address for Town Hall was 4083 Wilson’s Mills Road, Smithfield, NC 27577, but the new address going forward will be 4083 Wilson’s Mills Road, Wilson’s Mills, NC 27577 – using the same zip code from Smithfield, but with the correct Town location name.
More than 2,400 property owners within Wilson’s Mills town limits have been notified of the address change via mailed letters. While the new addresses take effect immediately, existing mailing addresses will still be recognized for a transitional period.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Regarding Address Changes in Wilson's Mills
What is the recent address change in Wilson's Mills?
The Town of Wilson's Mills has updated mailing addresses to reflect the town's name. Previously, addresses used "Smithfield" or "Clayton" due to postal delivery routes. Now, all addresses within Wilson's Mills town limits will use "Wilson's Mills" as the town name while retaining their existing ZIP codes.
Why was this address change implemented?
The change aims to eliminate confusion regarding mailing and physical addresses, enhance community identity, and assist residents in understanding their location, service providers, and voting districts.
When does this address change take effect?
The address change is effective immediately, as of March 28, 2025.
Will my ZIP code change?
No, your ZIP code will remain the same. Only the town name in your address will change to "Wilson's Mills." If you received a letter stating otherwise, please call, email or visit the Wilson's Mills Town Hall for clarification and to be issued a corrected letter.
Do I need to update my address with the USPS or other entities?
The USPS has approved this change, so there is no need to contact the local post office. For a time, mail addressed to either the old or new town name will be delivered. However, it's advisable to update your address as soon as possible with banks, utilities, and other service providers to ensure consistency. See our Change of Address Checklist to help guide you through the process. You do not need to update your deed. Also, since only the town name is changing—not your street address—you are not required to update your driver’s license at this time. The best time to make the change would be when you renew your license, but until then, no action is needed.
Amazon keeps defaulting our address to Clayton/Smithfield and not allowing us to switch to Wilson’s Mills for deliveries. Will our packages from major delivery companies or other entities still arrive to our residence if still listed as the old delivery address?
Yes, your packages and mail will still be delivered for a time with the old addresses. It will take some time for all the agencies who have been notified to update their systems, including everyone who pulls from USPS addresses. The change is taking effect immediately, but the old addresses will still work for a while. Please try again after a little time.
What happens to the Wilson’s Mills ZIP code (27593), and which post office should I use?
The Wilson’s Mills ZIP code (27593) will continue to be used only for Post Office boxes at the Wilson’s Mills Post Office. If your previous address used Clayton (27520 or 27527) or Smithfield (27577), you will continue to use the same corresponding ZIP code. Even though the town name will now be listed as Wilson’s Mills, your mail will still be handled by the same post office that previously served your address. This means your mail will still be delivered from either the Clayton or Smithfield post offices, depending on your ZIP code. You should continue using your corresponding post office for services like package pickups, mail holds, and other postal needs.
If I have a Wilson’s Mills Post Office box, will I need to get rid of it?
No, you’re welcome to keep your post office box. You are eligible to have your mail delivered to your house with the new address, but it’s not required. If you do decide to have mail delivered to your house, contact the Smithfield or Clayton post office (27520/27527=Clayton, 27577=Smithfield) and let them know you’re installing a mailbox for delivery. They cannot refuse for you to receive mail at your house.
How will this affect emergency services?
Emergency services have been notified of the address change to ensure there is no disruption in service.
